I havent written a lot of posts lately so let me play out the timeline of realisations and posts that i should have written.

  1. Early 2025. Title: “Time to switch to a European cloud”. In this Blog I could have written how i heard a talk by (Bert Hubert)[https://berthub.eu/], about having a sovereign european cloud and that we should really build this now. On a personal note, I setup my own mailserver on my own domain as a proof of concept for this, which is still working very nicely. And i’m quite happy with (Mailcow)[https://mailcow.email/] for running your own full mailserver.

  2. Late 2025. Title: “Where is the European cloud”. There is a good reason i did not write a post then, its because I had trouble finding a simple button to press to move stuff. Yes my VPS instance was in Scaleway, and i did have an email adress that is on my own infrastructure with my own domain… but that was about it. At this point I started to worry a bit more, and realised that its going to be more work than i thought. Around this time I just gave into self-hosting everything, so I setup Immich, document storage, git repos etc on the left-over computers in the basement.

Where I am today? Half of my photos are in my self hosted Immich server, the rest i finally managed to download and i still need to import those. But space is going to be an issue, so I need to upgrade that server probably.

Mail is mostly migrated, some stuff to hosted mail servers in NL (I picked Soverin), but everyday lately I realize that even though I picked a dutch tool for something… I did not fully check where they put their servers… I started emailing them… I have to say, their replies make me feel defeated… so far I get answers that indicate zero worry about this from their side.

Almost everobody replies that they are using the EU region in GCP or AWS, so they are in the EU… :face-palm:

We are talking governements, banks, accountants, insurance, companies across the board, so that means food, power, goods, services… its all in the american cloud. When, yes when, not if, shit hits the fan, and Trump shuts down our access to the cloud, then everything will stop.

I will continue moving things to my basement, but I think i will first start exporting bank records and accounting info on a weekly basis.
